To make the most of a day in Macau, it helps to decide when to move from the peninsula to Cotai before adding more sights. Group Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s into your time on the peninsula, and leave large-resort sightseeing and the evening for Cotai. Comparing accommodation also becomes easier when you choose according to which of these two areas you want to end your day in.

A Morning Walk from Senado Square to the Ruins of St. Paul’s

Buildings and pedestrian spaces around Senado Square. Crowds and passage conditions may differ on the day of your visit.

For a first visit, plan your old town walk in this order: Senado Square → the area around St. Dominic’s Church → the Ruins of St. Paul’s. Take in the square’s wave-patterned paving and buildings, head into the lanes, and finish your walk in front of the stone facade of the Ruins of St. Paul’s. Do not expect an intact church building to remain at the Ruins of St. Paul’s.

Do not fill your morning itinerary based solely on the distances shown on a map. Leave separate time for taking photographs and resting in the lanes so that lunch and your rest break do not get pushed back. As of the date checked, the Macao Government Tourism Office lists St. Dominic’s Church as temporarily closed, so plan only to walk around its exterior surroundings. If you intend to visit the interior of a museum or church, first recheck whether that particular facility is open on the day of your visit.

If stairs are difficult for you, avoid pushing yourself around the Ruins of St. Paul’s and shorten your walk. There is no need to add the nearby hills to the same outing just for the views. If anyone in your group has difficulty walking for long periods, include a break between exploring the square and visiting the ruins. Also discuss luggage storage with your accommodation in advance so that you do not have to pull your bags around.

Head to Cotai for Indoor Strolling and the Evening

For the afternoon, aim to make just one trip between the peninsula and Cotai. The light rail network includes Barra Station and a Cotai section, but it does not stop directly at Senado Square. Rather than planning to board the light rail right at the square, compare a route that includes getting to Barra Station with bus and taxi routes before setting out. You also need to check the final stretch from the station to the hotel entrance separately.

Once you arrive in Cotai, narrow your scope, for example by exploring the indoor spaces at The Venetian Macao and spending the evening around The Parisian Macao. Looking at an ornate lobby, shopping, and using paid facilities are different activities with different itinerary requirements. Wanting to see a place shown in a photograph does not mean that a particular experience is included in the room rate. Use a meal as a rest stop during sightseeing, and check whether the restaurant is open and what its reservation conditions are before heading there.

Use old town in the morning → lunch and a rest → travel to Cotai → indoor sightseeing and the evening as your basic plan. However, if you have evening plans on the peninsula, you can move your Cotai visit to another day. If you need to return to your accommodation frequently, give the peninsula and Cotai a separate sightseeing day each. On a short trip, staying in one area and leaving time to rest works better than going back and forth between the two several times.

Two Peninsula Hotels for an Old Town Itinerary

Grand Lisboa Macau is on Avenida de Lisboa on the peninsula. Its Deluxe rooms are listed as 45~53㎡, making them worth comparing if you plan to relax in your room after sightseeing on the peninsula. However, the similarly named Grand Lisboa Palace is a different hotel in Cotai. Check the address as well as the hotel name on the booking screen to avoid choosing accommodation in the wrong location. Grand Lisboa Macau · Check rooms on Agoda.

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 is on the peninsula’s western waterfront and can be considered alongside an old town itinerary. Its Superior rooms are 37㎡, with king-bed or 2-single-bed types. Distinguish the hotel’s waterfront location from the view offered by a particular room. The Superior room compared in this article has a city view, so if you are expecting a room overlooking the river, check other room names and their conditions. Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 · Check rooms on Agoda.

When choosing between these two hotels, your first destination the next day and the bed configuration are more practical criteria than how the building looks in photographs. Decide whether you will share one bed or use separate beds before comparing room types. Even on an old town-focused itinerary, not every attraction is the same distance from the hotel. Check walking routes according to the entrances and exits you will use and your group’s stamina. Treat sightseeing in Cotai as a separate trip requiring its own travel arrangements.

Two Hotels for Ending Your Day in Cotai

The Royale Deluxe Suite at The Venetian Macao is a 70㎡ room type with 1 king bed. It is worth comparing if you want separate sleeping and living areas, but also note that the living area is sunken. A larger room does not necessarily mean a layout that is comfortable for everyone to move around in. If anyone in your group finds changes in floor level difficult, confirm a suitable room layout with the hotel before choosing. The Venetian Macao · Check rooms on Agoda.

The Deluxe at The Parisian Macao is listed as 33㎡, with room types offering 1 king bed or 2 queen beds. The standard Deluxe and the Eiffel Tower Room are separate categories, so when comparing changes in floor level and views, read the name of the room you are booking before relying on photographs. If an Eiffel Tower view is essential, do not finalize a booking for a standard Deluxe room. Do not assume that having two beds increases the permitted occupancy; enter the actual number of guests and the children’s ages to check the conditions. The Parisian Macao · Check rooms on Agoda.

To narrow the choices, compare Grand Lisboa Macau · Check rooms on Agoda and Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 · Check rooms on Agoda for a peninsula-focused sightseeing trip, or The Venetian Macao · Check rooms on Agoda and The Parisian Macao · Check rooms on Agoda for an itinerary that ends the evening in Cotai. This list is not a ranking by price or hotel class. Finally, use the same dates and guest count to compare breakfast inclusion, cancellation deadlines, taxes, and conditions for additional guests before booking.
